What is this bit torrent stuff?

As the title asks...
I've downloaded the program and have run across a page of torrent stuff but nothing seems to happen. Is there something I should be looking for or what?

I've never run this stuff before.

bittorrent is just a way to download a file really... it in turn takes everyone thats seeding (uploading) and combines their speed for all those that are leaching (download)... when a file is new or in high demand it can be REALLY fast, but when the popularity goes down, it could take a month to get a file.

shareaza has a kazaa layout, but it has no spyware, searches 3 networks simultaneously (combines their speed) and it doubles as a bittorrent client.

hope that helps.

its a good way to download movies when they first come out on dvd....like if you wanted to download matrix revolutions right now you're only going to get 30 kbs download, which will take 4 days to download the a 4 gig movie..

Torrent sites are really getting attacked now by the movie companies. Torrents IMO are only good for getting full albums. Limewire and DC++ are good for everything else.

Excuse my ignorance but it does translate the files to a separate identity, right? Like, for example, I won't need the bit torrent PLAYER to play the bit torrent FILE.

I don't think so but just wanted to confirm.
Like I said, I know nothing about it and was hoping you guys can answer for me since I'm at work

once the torrent is complete it rebuilds the binary data file into the original file name (avi, mpg, exe, etc...), the torrent file is just for the sharing purposes.. no special players required (might need a codec or 2 though)

ah cool thanks
got another question I forgot to ask before... Does the bit torrent share your stuff without authorization? Does it allow you to designate what file you want it to take from?

Thanks for the answers so far. You guys have been really helpful

no it will not share your stuff without you knowing, to share your stuff you will have to seed it to one of the torrent sites, and as for the previously downloaded ones if you are using the official bittorrent client, when you close that window all uploading stops, as for shareaza, you have to go in and delete the torrents from the torrent folder, or it will keep on sharing. also, be sure to check your incomplete folder once in a while, sometimes the data file doesn't get deleted after its been moved.
