Is marine grease better than regular grease?

 

depends on the application... i used marine bearing grease on my front hubs on my old 4x4 ford because i knew i was going to have it in deep water and did not want to repack the bearings all the time... if you use marine grease you need to make sure it can handle the stress of being used in whatever application you are using it in... i had this blue grease that i used and it actually said on the container ideal for 4x4 and trailer hubs.....

 

Just about ready to repack hubs and looking for grease you describe. What is name of grease you make reference to?

 

Believe it or not its sold at WalMart.

 

as mentioned above, unless you're going through all sorts of water, just use generic lithium grease. otherwise marine grease is your best bet.

 

Thread hijack, but didnt 4wheel off road have an edition about "green grease?" Its supposedly supposed to resist elements like marine grease or something special like that. I havent even seen them yet.

 

I just replaced and packed my front bearings using Mobil1 synthetic wheel bearing grease. Its a maroonish-red color and seems to be working well although I admit I am not sure I could tell a difference from one grease to another - just figured synthetic is a nice improvement over regular.

 

I've got an '88 pickup, 4WD, manual hubs. What size socket do I need for the wheel bearing nut? I've heard 54mm and I've heard 55mm. Didn't mean to hijack the thread... just thought it was an opportune time to ask.

i use amsoil marine grease. works nicely for everything i use grease for.

and if your IFS is like my straight axle, the nut is 54mm.
