I dropped my truck off today to have the fuel filter replaced. I had looked under the truck and saw how rusty the lines were and decided I'd rather let a shop break them versus myself. They called and said (not to my surprise) that the brake and fuel lines need to be replaced, which includes dropping the gas tank. Where's a good source to get the replacement lines that I will need, aside from the dealership? It sounds like I will need the entire lines from the motor back. It's an 89 Extended cab 4x4 SR5 model. Is this stuff dealer only? Or can a brake shop usually custom make replacements?

 

Hmmmmmmmm.......never heard of having to replace steel brake and fuel lines. Then again, I live in the south, not rust.

 

After buying my Runner, I had to get my fuel lines replaced - they had rotted near the tank and it was recommended that I replace the entire line. I got it done at a shop that specializes in rads and fuel systems. I'm assuming they fabricated the lines themselves...

i think you can get it pre bent from the dealer for cheaper than you think. i just bought both brake lines (the ones that run along the frame from the front to the back) from them and it was only $40 for both.

 

I had a leak over the gas tank as well. I ended up getting both sections of the metal fuel line from the dealer (although only the rear section over the tank was fully rusted). They had it pre-bent (although it was hard to get the old pipe off and new on). You can view my Post on this as well.

The cost was around $22 bucks for each section. The time consuming part is pulling the gas tank and moving stuff to get the pipe out. In addition, the fitting to my flexline going to the Fuel Pump also had to be replaced.

I have bent my own pipe (when I could not find the prebent in stock) however, it is much faster to get it pre-fab. Also, my line on my 90 4Rnnr was 8mm, which is close, but not exactly 5/16th (7.9mm) O.D. If you fab your own you will have to get the metric ends to match as well. And I never did locate a place to get 8mm OD metal line in US...
