How to remove speedo please
Hi, I am new to this forum and also new to my lovely 3.0l V6 4Runner. It is a 1993 model. Leaving for work this morning, suddenly there was a loud rattling in the dashboard and the speedo went crazy - slowing down however and it displayed the correct speed, but above 20mph and it went very loose with a lot more rattling noise. Now, I could be very wrong, but I am thinking that the speedo cable has come loose. I have searched the web for reference, and cannot find out how to access the rear of the speedo to check the cable. If anybody on here can help me I would really appreciate it. I have already made a mistake by removing the drivers side air vent to attempt access through that, and damaged the vent grills in the process.
Thanks for reading and I hope you can help,
Neil.

I'm no tech, but I found this. Don't know if it'll help.
"Question: I have a 1990 Toyota 4x4, V6 pickup. The speedometer is bouncing and making some noise. I set in to take the dash apart to get to the back of the speedometer and quickly decided against it. I was told that I could pull the cable out of the cable housing from the transfer case end, Lube it , and slide it back in with out any problem. Thanks Is this true?

Answer: Yes, you will need to unscrew the spedo cable from the back of the gauge cluster. Slide out the cable and lube it with 3 in one oil, then reinstall. This may help reduce the bouncing. Sometimes it is necessary to completely replace the spedo cable to repair."
I bet (if you feel handy enough)you can just meticulously disassemble the dash and get to that sucker. My bud with an '85 4Runner (Yotatech member Getitdone)took his dash all the way out and re-installed without any manual. But im sure yours is a little more tricky. Have you tried a Haynes manual? Pick one up at an Autozone or a local autoparts store if you can.

Now I've found a bit of info from a UK Hilux site - it seems that I may need to remove both the upper and lower dash panels to get at the speedo from behind - does anybody know if this is true - I suppose I should just get stuck into it, but I would prefer to avoid any unneccessary dismantling.

the transfer case on a truck is mounted under the truck, as part of the drivetrain consisting of the engine and transmission. i think it is on the end of the transmission, and to locate it, you could try and trace back your front driveline from your diff, if you can do that. but im just a nOOb, also.

No, I'm in the UK, so it's only 9.45 am - I'm at work, so what better time to get on with it - rather work's time than my time ! I am reading also that I may need to grease the cable, or replace it fully - but I am hoping that just pushing it back in may do the job ...

Right, I've now got to the back of the dash panel - this involves removing the COMPLETE dash, drivers side, passenger side and centre. I would advise starting with the passenger side, which will then make visible the screws holding the centre panel and the drivers side. There is a hidden screw behind the heating controls, top left corner. I can reach round the back and feel that the speedo cable is secure - but I did not like the idea of disconnecting the panel only to struglle with re-connecting. So, I'm going to order a new speedo cable here in the UK ( it needs to be shipped from Japan ) - approx £50, two weeks delivery - and get a local garage to change it for me !

The transfercase is connected to the other end of the 4hi-4lo-2hi stick That is what makes your truck 4wd, it is connected to the back of the transmission, and the drivshafts both connect to it.
