Anyone notice any difference in fuel economy (mpg) between Mobil 1 and Mobil 1 EP (Extended Performance) motor oil? Mobil 1 EP doesn't have the fuel conserving seal on it and I seem to be getting less mpg with it compared to new engine factory fill oil.

 

How much difference is there in fuel economy (mpg %, etc.) between Mobil 1 & Mobil 1 EP (Extended Performance) motor oil? I emailed Mobil with the question. The response I got was "There is not much of a difference between the two." So,how much is--not much? A call to Mobil got the following response: [With regular Mobil 1 a vehicle went 300 miles on XX amount of gas, and 2,000' less with Mobile 1 EP with same XX amount of gas.] If that's true, I don't understand how that small of a difference could keep the EP version from getting the energy conserving seal. I suspect there's more of a difference in fuel economy between the two versions.

 

What mileage were you seeing with regular Mobil 1 and EP?

 

Apprx. 20 mpg with factory fill oil and substantial highway miles. 18.8 mpg (checked once-1 tankful--not enough for good average/comparison, unless near identical driving conditions) with Mobile 1 EP and probably more city driving with some A/C use. Haven't checked mpg with regular Mobile 1. My comparison/evaluation is in progress. I'm trying to get confirmation in writing (web contact/email) from Mobil on what they told me--basically micro difference in mpg.

 

Mobil sent me the following response via. email today, confirming what they told me: "You will most likely not even notice the difference in the fuel economy,
it is very minute." That being the case, I'll stick with the Extended Performance version for the added engine wear protection.

One informative site I came across said to use 5w50. Easy on the cold starts, great for preventing wear.

This Mobil 5000,7500 & 12,000 extended life oil just came out by me like last week. I guess since they now have a 5,000 mile oil that Mobil 1 is a 3,000 mile oil.

 

I have been checking out the bobistheoilguy.com site. It's a very informative forum. I'll have to check into the 5W-50. How does switching from 5W-30 to 5W-50 affect gas milage and approximately how much wear reduction could one expect? My owners manual says to use 5W-30, so I'll probably stick with that til warranty ends, unless Toyota would for sure honor warranty using 5W-50. Thanks for the info.

Go look at that thread. There is a link to Synlube, click the one for synthetics to read about the 5w50. Be sure to have some time as it is a looong article.
Then do an internet search for "Synlube 5w50" and look at what others have to say. I still have my doubts about Amsoil, but that is my opinion. I just want to know why no retail stores sell it and you have to go through some 2nd or 3rd party that is run out of a house to acquire it.

You have a 2005 Taco. I am wondering if you are checking the mileage before its broken in. I would wait until about 5000 miles before checking gas mileage. Everything needs to break in, not just the engine.
Just a thought.

 

I'll keep that in mind. I've got about 3400 miles to go before reaching that point. Got a little over 20 mpg (mostly 6 mile trips and city driving) last check with Mobil 1 EP and 93 octane (only octane I've used thus far).

 

Just to clarify, you don't have to go through another person/dealer to buy Amsoil products. Just go to their webpage and order it.

 

Thats how I bought a case for the only time I used it. I just don't get that this stuff is popular. Do a search on it and you will get back 1,000's of links where people are selling it because they are dealers. Why not just sell the stuff to a store and make it readily available and make insane profits? It almost seems as if this is all a marketing ploy. Let so many people become a "dealer" of Amsoil products and they will flood the net with positive propganda trying to sell it and more and more people will buy it.
This is all an opinion. No need for anyone to get mad. This all just does not make any sense to me. Why can't I just not go to the local auto parts store and pick it up?

I think the jury is out on Amsoil,,,I say that for the following reasons, go to google search and put in synthetic oil, you will see hundreds if not thousands of posts by eager dealers to sell you amsoil...you will hardly ever see Shell, Chevron, Mobil, Pennzoil, or BP come up on the inquiry,,,,,,I ask this rhetorical question, how can a company, Namely Amsoil produce a superior product than the aforemention refineries, and claim although not certified trust us?...I smell a pyramid scheme,,,,,,stick with the known products...........hig
