Hey all,

I currently have a pretty nice sound system in my 92, but I have grown to dislike the lack of midbass that my 4" speakers (in the factory cutouts in the dash) provide. I was hoping to maybe get some kick panels or door panels where I could mount at least 5.25s, maybe even 6.5s. Any suggestions? Because I am so busy at this point, I would rather just pay for some than actually make them myself.

Hi, take a look on my stereo page.
I have some pods in the doors of my 2nd gen that house deep Infinty Reference 6.5" componets.

The sound is great.
Any shop should be able to dupe if for you, or if you have the tools they would be very easy to make.

It's a two piece design, and you don't use the covers that come with the speakers when you buy them.

 

Thanks for the ultra-fast response, Corey. What you have is exactly what I want. I was looking at some Q-Forms, but I think that they would interfere with me being able to use the clutch since they come in so far.

How would I go about building what you have? I have no idea even where to start? Is it too complicated? I don't think placing the tweeters up on the door will be too complicated, however I'm not so sure about the midbass enclosure.

 

I bet there is less than $15 worth of plywood there.
I'll go out in a bit here and take some more pics, and some dimensions.
That should provide you with more details, and a shop then can make them exactly like this.

Are your door panels the same as mine though?
Some I have seen have the map pocket go all the way across instead of half way like mine do.

It really does sound great, and I'm oly using a Rockford 200a amp unbridged for the two door speakers.
They punch good, and if I turn off my 15" sub, they still have some good bass to them.

6.5" in the doors make good sence for crisp mids.

Hmm...I think mine go all the way to the end of the door, however I can probably build around it. Thanks for all your help Corey! I'll let you know what I decide to do and how it comes out!

Thanks Corey that helps alot. I think I'm going to print out those pics and take them to a stereo shop and see if they will build some for me. Hopefully they won't mind building them without actually installing the a stereo.

Thanks Cebby, it's been a long work in progress over the past 4 years.
It's also taught me how to do a little HTML at the same time.

I try & document just about everything I have done to the rig.

 

btw- I think you can sink a 5-6 inch speaker in the door panel just in front of the power controls...if I remember right, thats where we put them in an old friends '89 SR5. They fit great, and looked pretty factory (for being aftermarket)

This is a sweet set-up,(Corey's) a friend here has something very similar. Corey, dont the 2nd gen 4Runners have a "scored" cut-out on the front door panels? I havent looked @ mine(only owned the thing for 5 mo. now) I assumed it did, as my boss had them in his 93 p.u. I was planning to put 5 in. in the door when I got around to it...... maybe I cant!!! I have not seen to many other 2nd gen doors, or paid any attention to them.

Not sure why the previous owner went with this setup.
Maybe someone with another SR5 2nd gen can take a pic of their door panel, so we can compare.

I know the trucks of the same vintage have the map pocket go all the way across, instead of half way like mine.
Maybe my map pocket was modded, I don't know.

You map pockets are at the opposite end than mine.
Perhaps they moved mine for the pods?

Of they changed from my '91 design.
Now we need to see another '91 pic.

Pretty sure yours were moved. It is an easy operation to relocate the pockets. Plenty of 91's out there to verify it though.

 

Yeah Cebby's right, I just compared the pics of his doors to mine, and they're identical. They probably just moved your pockets Corey.

So moving them doesn't leave holes in the vinyl, or perhaps my pods covered that part?

I know what's going on here.
They used the same hole near the front near my pod to anchor down the front of my map pocket, while the pod covers the hole that was originaly for the front of yours.

They then just drilled a new hole back aft for the rear of my map pocket.

I guess if they had put the pods at the rear of the door, a lot of the sound would get muffled at it would be pointing to the back of the seats.
