My 97 Tacoma won't start now unless I push the clutch start cancel button. Could someone tell me what this switch is called or give me a part no.

The switch is called a "clutch start cancel switch"...call your local dealer and find out the part # and then order it wherever.

The clutch start cancel switch works. Thats how I start the truck is by pushing that button. Is it still the clutch start cancel switch bacuase it lights up and works fine?

 

Maybe I'm not reading this right, but I'm not really sure what your question is. The switch is still called the "clutch start cancel" whether the switch is working or not.

Are you saying that your truck only starts by using the switch, and that is doesn't start when you actually press the clutch pedal? If that's the case, it sounds like the switch at the clutch pedal is bad.

If you bought the truck used, then most likely the previous owner modded it so that you have to press it to start the truck. Sometimes people do that because if somebody breaks in there's a good chance they won't think of that switch and just figure it's got a starter kill switch and leave (after taking a few things). I think there's a write-up on one of the TTORA pages but don't quote me on that, a buddy in Houston did that. I thought about doing it to mine but mines got a starter kill with the factory installed (Japan) alarm so I didn't.

 

What is the switch called at the clutch pedal? Thats it. Anyone know what it's called or have a part no.

It's called a "CLutch Switch," but you need to figure out whether it's a Ford made system or a Denso made system. the parts may be the same Toyota part though so the system make may not matter. just call the dealer, ir fiddle with the switch because maybe it's just out of adjustment.

The Clutch Switch also acts to deactivate the cruise control (if you have one) so if that's not disengaging when the clutch is pressed then that's the culprit.,

EDIT: the Toyota part number for the switch in mine is 8828014030, it should be the same part. It's $17 at the dealer and $12 at www.1sttoyotaparts.com

 

Its a nuetral saftey switch wells part# ja4336 $36.49

 

Funny, something must be wrong with mine in my 1st gen. I can start it regardless of what's going on with the clutch. I actually almost started it once while it was in gear - wasn't paying attention... :pat:

 

thats normal, older toy's did not use the pedal switch, so it doesn't matter where the pedal is at

My 85 HAD a switch in it as it is in the old dash. I'm thinking about putting it back in and using it as the above mentioned "kill" switch.
