are there any 22re turbo rebuild kits that work on the original 22re turbo engines? also what is involved in adapting a normaly aspirated 22re into a turbo that came in the factory turbo engines (22re-t)? thanks for the help

 

the factory turbo kits quite frankly sucked... if you want to turn a 22re into a turbo, i would advise against it and get a supercharger from lc engineering....

I know the 22RTE had lower compression pistons than the regular 22RE, so you'd prolly have to pick up a set of those at the minimum to do the swap. Most likely you'd have to get the computer and wiring harness as well.

 

might want to talk to somebody at LC engineering. they could set you up.

at the minimum, you'll need lower compression, preferably forged pistons. the rest of the bottom end is essentially the same as a typical engine. i think turbo heads had a larger combustion chamber to further lower compression, but you could make up for it with lower compression pistons

 

The 22RTE has low compression pistons. A Different head; bigger valves. it has an oil cooler. Bigger injectors. different throttle body. different emmisions.
a bigger oil pump with a different timing cover to accept a second oil galley.

Turbo trucks have stronger transmissions and rear ends.

The ECU is different also. And of course the air box and air flow meter. the RTE AFM has a circuit in it to cut the flow of gas to the injectors if the boost goes to high.

I own a factory turbo truck and its pretty sweet. BUt it was expensive to build and I didn't hot rod it very much. I wouldn't waste any money trying to convert a RE to an RTE. Too expensive for the HP gain you'll get. The RTE has some limitations with the stock ECU/injectors and the most you can hope to get is about 200 HP and that is pushing the reliability envelope. They blow head gaskets really fast with high boost. to get really high horsepower you need a different injection system

A normally aspirated supra engine 7mge will give you 200 reliable HP and save you thousands of dollars.

 

if i was building a turbo engine, i'd ditch the stock ECU entirely and run an aftermarket system like SDS. more control over things and you can get rid of the AFM for a MAS or MAP sensor.

metal head gasket, ARP head studs, and forged pistons at a very minimum. toysport says that with that setup, the motor will survive 25lbs of boost. the stock bottom end is pretty stout though...high nickel block, forged rods and forged crankshaft. it's main downfall as a turbo engine is it's long stroke, under optimal conditions it won't really make much power past 6000RPM.

I've searched and researched on this very topic for months - Converting the 22RE to a 22RTE. In conclusion, it's just not worth it. To much money, to much work, and the results aren't at all exciting. Plus, the conversion can, and most likely will end up being very problematic. This guy has a 22RTE (came stock with the 22RTE.) that he's put ALOT of work in, with many problems and difficulties. He's the man when it comes to early turbo toys - but he only has about 220HP. This is really good for a 1st gen truck, but still, it's only 220HP. Stick in a Chevy 350.

 

350? ah man, what a boring motor to have in a toy!

not to mention it's a heavy pig at nearly 600lbs...way too much for a 2wd toyota.

i think a cool V8 engine swap would be a 215 buick motor. all aluminum 3.5l v8, weighs about 5lbs more than a 22R

 

Whatever you swap in will be better than trying to fab a turbo for your 22RE.

i don't know...200hp in a 2wd yota would be SCARY to drive...
