i had my 22re rebuilt and i was installing the timing cover....then i noticed a cracked the cover!!!!!!!! :pat:

the bolt way up top that connects it to the head made it crack....i torqued it down to 9lbs
i was thinking since there really isnt much pressure maybe i could seal it with something????????

a new timing cover is around $60 i think, i would go that route unless you know that you can seal it good, you don't want to get it all back together and have a leak, do it right the first time

 

where do they sell it for $60? ive only found at one place and they sell it for $90

 

i was giving a ballpark figure i have seen them for $70 somewhere, if you know someone that can weld aluminum, that may be a alternative also, i will see what i can find for prices

 

How about this

 

Fellas, if the gasket comes off with the cover, this is th front part of the head gasket and must, I repeat, must be put back with a piece of a new gasket when you reassemble. This space left void of the front head gasket will always crack the cover. Use Permatex Ultra Copper sealant on the top and it will ber good to go. Also leave the front bolts loose untill you snug up the top bolt.Don't ever put back the plastic guides, see D.O.A. Racing for some steel guides,money well spent(80.00). You can leave the broken pieces in the pan as they are so big that they won't ever plug up the huge screen on the pickup tube. You can lift the motor enough on a 4x4 by taking out the motor mount bolts(4) and taking the steering loose on the driver side only and dropping the pan and slipping through the front of the pan take the pickup tube off and leave in pan as you slide the pan out the front!
Victor makes a pan gasket for these and order a new pickup tube gasket from dealer for the reinstall.I cleaned my pan because I am a finatic about things, but wasn't necessary.I just put a 85re motor home engine in a 92re 4x4 5 speed. No problems whatsoever. Hopes this helps someone. Tim

 

I agree on the steel guides, put 'em in and never worry. I have a buddy that had his 22re chain changed at a shop. They didn't clean the pan and his strainer clogged up w/small plastic bits of the guides and it siezed up due to lack of lube. The broken guide must have gotten into or behind one of the sprockets and ground into sand sized bits. The shop admitted fault and set him up, but you can't be too carefull. It's a bit of a pain to get the pan off w/IFS, but it's sweet compared to engine failure, and you'll have the front diff removal procedure down as an added bonus!

 

I'd JB weld the cover. I am, however, a redneck, so you might not want to. It's better than 90 bucks, anyway.

 

hehe, hapens alot with the pickup's motors, there's hidden bolts that you can't really see, you pull it beaks, mine was sealed after the motor was rebuilt (costly bugger it was). I have a little bit of oil undser my truck, just keep an eye on it for a loss of alot of oil.
