Browns Camp, OR... sup?

Just wondering the specifics. I signed up on 4x4destinations a while back. Never heard anything.

Anyone know anything?

I'm still planning on going, as is Rob (WATRD) and another WATTORA member.

I'm not too sure who in the Oregon bunch is coming.

I believe the plan is to meet at 9AM on Sat., 12/14 (tomorrow...hooray! ) at ???

Perhaps at the entrance to the ORV Park? I'm not sure yet...I'll try to post more info later today once I get it...

Perhaps Rob will chime in...

Ah, I wish I had seen this thread earlier... I figured I would get mail if anyone had questions...

Jim is correct, we are looking at a 9:00 meet time.

Directions from Portland are here: http://www.mtbr.com/trails/Oregon/BrownsCamp.html

And coming from the North, this is what I have;

"Directions: Take I-5 south. You want to get on HWY 26 west. Stay on that until you reach HWY 6 (there should be a 'fork' in the road and you take the left)."

Dane, the TTORA, Oregon president has this to say about the plans for the group down there...

"Since we are meeting at 9am at camp, we will probably head out of Corvallis at about 7am, so that should put us on HWY 6/26 at about 8:30am. We can always try to find each other by CB on the road if necessary."

Damn! I wish you would have emailed me. I have only had the time to check threads I was subscribed to, so I didn't see this new one pop up.

I sent a mail with additional details to those who RSVP'd, so if you are on that list, you should have everything I have at this point.

I hope to see you there!

Well.... I went to browns camp.

Where were you Rob?

I waited at the Rogers Camp Trailhead Parking lot (First left after the gravel pit station of ODOT) from 8:30am till 9:20. I was convinced by some guy (forget his name, Black 98 Tacoma with topper and rack and TTORA sticker) to head over to Brown Camp deeper in the forest. When we arrived there we found a crew of guys and soon set out. We traveled a little ways, and then all the trucks turned off on a trail I thought best I didnt attempt (My truck is bone stock). Since I have no means of communication (ie CB) I attempted to find a way around. Then the next 1 1/2 hours, I drove around looking for Rob and his red Tacoma. No luck. I left to head home around 11:30.

Kinda disappointed in the whole thing. I knew I should have bought a CB prior to this event.

Hi Jay. Usually when we go out in a group, there is always someone who doesn't have a CB and ends up feeling left out so to speak, or in their case, not to speak.

Last trip we were up in snow and it was slippery for some.
When you have a large group like that, it's essential to have one so as to know when to slow down if there is a really slippery patch of ice.

Yes, get one for sure, it will come in real handy, plus they are a lot of fun when you have a group going out.

Did you get any pics while there?

Jay,
Sorry you didn't have a good time.

The group from Washington (me, Rob, Kyle, and their women-folk) did not arrive at Browns Camp until 10-10:30am (due to rainy weather traffic and a detour on I-5 that closed all 4 lanes). The only phone number we had was for Dane's home phone (the OR-TTORA prez.).

When we arrived we did not find anyone, so we backtracked to fuel-up and orient ourselves on the map. Then we headed back to Browns and started getting ready...aired down, took off mud flaps, etc. We were soooooo close to getting kicked out since we didn't have the Oregon 4x4 stickers.

Anyway, yeah, we finally did hit the trails and had a good time (just the 3 trucks). It was very unfortunate the way things turned out. We did manage to raise Dane over the CB, but no one ever came looking for us.

I managed to get a nice sized dent in my body, would have been saved by sliders no doubt. Also we managed to get up a "Most Difficult" trail, so that was very encouraging.

I'm sure Rob will have the un-abridged story & pics later on...(I think he's still in Portland right now).

Most definitely.

While talking with the Sheriff, he mentioned something about getting free firewood & a camping permit to do some trail work. I'm not entirely sure I remember that correctly...

However, that sounded like something good to do when the weather warms up, and perhaps we can bring down some more WATTORA people.

It's a bummer that we didn't really have a backup plan in case we were late. Oh well...there's always next time...

We did do pretty well for "stock" trucks. Kyle just had some 31" x 12.5" Xterrains. I have a 3" lift and 31" Wildcat M/Ts. And, of course, you probably know what Rob's truck is running.

I am sorry to hear that you didn't find it to you liking. But, we were there. As Jim relayed, we arrived late due to monsoon season on the freeway and courtesy of an accident closing I-5 and forcing us to take a painful detour. When we arrived, we were immediately nailed by the Sheriff for having out of state plates and no Oregon ORV permits, a problem we had been assured was a non-issue. After much butt smooching, the Sheriff agreed to give us a break on the permits and gave us his card to keep us out of trouble.

I made repeated attempts to contact the Oregon chapter via CB and was successful once, but they never came looking for us and we got tired of waiting, so we headed out to explore on our own.

We found som great trails and did some we likely should have skipped, Jim picked up some body damage on one of the "Most Difficult" trails when a rock the size of a VW attacked him, but the rest of us got away clean.

So, we were on site from about 10:00 until we finished airing up in the dark. I was prepared to be pretty bent out of shape towards the Oregon chapter, but as we discussed driving out of there, it may have actually been to our advantage... we got a chance to wheel the way we always do, supporting each and spotting and deciding the route by committe. It sounds like the other gang was not sticking together anyway, so perhaps it was for the best.

I am sure we will be back down there, to "poach", that is wheel in a territory that is not within our state boundries, but I don't know that we will bother trying to make a co-chapter run out of it again... In the mean time, I hope that you will consider coming up for a run up our way. We will make it worth your time and even if you are late, we will make sure that you hook up with us. I was looking to Oregon to organize this thing since we were guests, hundreds of miles from home, but that didn't seem to happen. We do things a bit differently up this way...
