Timing belt change: 99 4Runner 3.4L

Do you have to remove the AC compressor in order to remove the timing belt tensioner?

I tried removing one of the bolts on the tensioner and it's starting to strip. So, I'm removing the bracket in order to get a better angle at it.

Also, do you remove the backplate near the tranny/oil pan in order to jam the torque converter so you can untorque/torque the main front hub/pulley bolt?

Yes, I did for the AC bracket and it came out fine.

I rented a chain wrench and used it around the crank pulley (wrap an old belt around to protect the pulley grooves).
