I'm about to purchase a 99 4runner SR5 [5spd], but the owner doens't know whether or not the vehicle has a locking differential.

Is there some way from looking at the VIN or something to determine whether it has a locking rear differential? Would there be a button or something to push?

Look to the left of the steering wheel column. There will be a button w/ red letters saying

RR
DIFF
LOCK

If the button isn't there, then it doesn't have a locker.

 

Look for a button to the left of the steering wheel that says RR DIFF LOCK.

Even more sure than looking for the switch, look at the diff. If the drain is on the drivers side, it has a factory locker. If the drain is on the passenger side, it does not.

I live in Auburn and will be heading through Anniston this weekend going to and from Fort Payne (Desoto State Park). Even smaller world.
