Question The name 22REC?

I was wondering what the engine name 22REC means? Im guessing the E stands for EFI. (And if had a T it would mean Turbo right?) What is the R and C mean? Or the 22?

R= head design, Single overhead chain driven cam.

E= Electronic fuel injection

T= Turbo

C= California emissions compliant for that vintage

22= 22nd overall variant of that engine family. Engines in this family were in everything from forklifts to Celicas to who knows what else.

So what's the 22 stand for. It's a 2366cc or 2.4L. You would think it should be called a 24R.

In all fairness, I edited my post after he asked about the 22 part. I can edit without the little edit tag apperaing on my posts.

actually, the R is just the engine family. 22 is the design revision. tacomas have the 2nd and 3rd revision of the RZ engine family.

some other cool toyota codes:

Z - supercharged
G - wide angle twin cam(e.g. racing), most came with side draft carbs before EFI
F - narrow angle twin cam("economical" twin cam)
