Ok my rear diff has been making this odd clicking/squeeling noise and I thinks its either the bearings inside or the spider bearings on the U-joint. Intsead of paying someone to pull it apart and fix it I would like to pull the 3rd member with an e-locker and put it in my axle housing. I am wondering if it will fit the '91 axle. If anyone has any ideas let me know because it will give me an excuse to get that locker that ive always wanted.

 

Def go Elock. God I hate auto locks. I have one and it was the worst 190 ive spent yet. yeah it rocks in the hills but in town I just want to burn my tires off on corners so i dont have to hear the damn thing. thats a wierd noise you have going. I say secure your rig on jack stands and have a helper hop in and run the gears so you can assure its not just simply in your ujoints. if its in the a$$ end then hell yeah swap in an elocker. great chance to mod your rig.

Its coming from the rear diff/driveshaft area so who knows I havent taken the U-Joint out yet to see if thats it. Im kinda hoping its the diff. I wonder how hard it is to switch the whole carrier and 3rd or if its even possible.

3rd Gen runner housings are wider and have different sized link mounts in different locations.

Move a couple studs, weld in some filler and make a notch, that is the easiest way.

I think I will be doing this retrofit this summer. I think that I ahve 3rd gen. envy! First I put a 3rd gen. motor in now the rear diff.! LOL

I already have all of the wiring done, just need the diff. now.

 

Ok The noise turned out to be the u-joint bearings. They were so messed up it took 5 hours to change the thing and we eventually just cut the old u-joint to get it out.

 

I did both u-joints today on my girlfriend's 2 gen. It was the hardest I have ever done. I was wishing I had a torch myself after 2 hours on the first. The angle of the outside of the yokes made it hard for the joint press to stay straight once the first cap was removed. I wanted to get crooked as I was pressing the second cap. I just wish she could have been there to see the trouble it was, lol.
