My experience is that a less aggressive tread works best for sand. (We have a nice area on the coast here and I've play there a lot over the years in various rigs, from a 22RE 4r to a blown/ nitrous CJ with paddles.) Aggressive tires tend to dig, and that's the last thing you want. Bigger is better, especially wider, but all-terrain tread seems to be King. Then air down. I found I could spin mild treads to keep my rpm up when climbing dunes, where mud tread wouldn't spin and the motor would lug down and I would get up the hill. Now, if you have tons of horsepower and can spin anything (think 400+ hp,) go for the most aggressive tread you can get.

if you really want tires just for sand duning, i would consider the goodyear wrangler GSAs. they float across the sand nicely (thats what i have, im 2wd w/open differential and dont get stuck much).
if you want an overall good tire, go with all terrains, like BFGs.
dont get mudders, theyll just dig you in

out of the two tires you mentioned, the all terrain should work better.
but get the tire that's best overall. unless you're wheelin pimso all the time i guess.
last year at pismo i had MTRs. they're real agressive, but i didn't have a problem. it's all about airing down right and keeping the momentum if you don't wanna get stuck.

wasn't the tires fault. and the any weaknesses the MTRs have in sand, it's made up for 100 times over by their asskickingness on other offroad terrain.
how are those GSAs on the rocks?
