igniton timing not advancing..
1988 pickup, 22re, 20k on rebuild.
Hey all,
doing my bi-annual smog on the truck and I am aving an issue with setting timing. Following procedure in the FSM(IG15, steps 3/4).
When I jump T and E1,I get the light on the dash, I set base to 5*, pull jumper and timing doesnt advance to 12*
I am using an Innova light. I have checked the TPS, it is good. I checked my vacum hoses, all seem good. I wiggle wires going to TPS, no changes.
I have been driving the rebuild for about 18k miles(22re Performance) It has smogged several times with no issues.
Any thoughts or direction is appreciated.
Thanks!

You want the engine off when removing the T-E1 jumper. Stop the motor, pull the jumper, start the motor, check the timing. That's how I always did mine, and I set the timing once a year, when I had my 87 4Runner. I also replaced the VC gasket, and set the valve lash at the same time.
Try shutting the engine off, key off, pull the jumper, then fire it up and check th timing. That way the ECU resets the timing from having the jumper in, to not having the jumper in.
Does that help at all?
