Timing issue

I have been searching for a couple days now (not including the days that I worked and used my phone to search) and I am wondering if anyone has run across a timing issue where the jumper doesn't change the rpm or the timing mark.

I am thinking it might be a distributor but have to borrow the timing light right now as I dont own one yet. when I did jump it before, nothing happened. Setting the timing to 12 degree's (average from the jumping timing mark) it doesn't run at all... heats up, runs like a bag of crap.. I advance the timing... it runs good but still has horrible gas mileage. I might pop the cap before work and make sure the rotor is on tight.. I have a spare distributor (dont know if its good or bad) with cap and rotor and a spare TPS. Any idea's are welcome and I will try my best.

ps.. looking for a video on how to set the TPS correctly with a ohm-meter
using an Canadian tire high end voltmeter. Got the charts already and know the pins.. just want a walkthrough so I know I am not going crazy lol

I know it's not a video but 4crawler's TPS write-up is top notch. http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTricks/TPS/index.shtml

That is the thread I have printed to help me set it. Just wanted to make sure. Might make a video myself if I get it right. I think its important to have a visual reference for this type of thing.

When you jump TE1 and E1 the check engine light should flash.
If it's not flashing then either the light is burned out or TE1 and E1 are not jumped properly.

If the check engine light is flashing but the timing mark doesn't change then the TPS is shot or out of adjustment.

That is absolutely the best thing I have heard yet. I was checking my distributor rotor and cap for tightness. But I know the check engine light flashes when I jump the terminals. So I know the tps is out of adjustment or shot. Either way... simple fix I got a spare tps.
Is it easier with the throttle body off the v6?
I figure I will clean the throttle body anyways.. What areas should I check for excessive play or funky grime?

I find them easier to adjust off the vehicle.

I got the cleanest throttle body I could today and paid 22 bucks for it with another tps. Motor lost a piston so I doubt it was a bad tps.
I will try setting this one over at my buddies place. Just to make sure I got another set of hands.
Any thoughts on the ports to clean on this?

just wanted to finish up this thread.
I ended up getting another distributor for free so I put it in and BINGO! fixed the timing issue instantly. Gotta love friends with spare parts.

thanks for all the help
