Oil leaking from shifter tower

Howdy!

So I've recently completed a transmission swap in my '83 pickup. I went from a 4 speed to a 5 speed. I don't know for certain the model, but I'm pretty sure its either a w55 or w56. Anyhow, since day of install, the 5 speed leaks from around the shifter socket. Its not overfull, as when I drained the oil this afternoon immediately after farting around in the hills, only 2 quarts came out. The shifter bushing has been replaced, and the rubber splash guard is still in place. I have left the shifter boot off so I can monitor conditions when the leaking begins. It seems to be when the transmission is hot, and on long uphill pulls. There is no breather that I could find, and I'm genuinely out of ideas.

Between the transmission and the shifter housing there's supposed to be an oil baffle. Is that there?

I believe it is. In my case its a sheet of black rubber with a little hole in it for the shifter. This goes between the trans and the base of the shift tower, snugged down with 6 bolts. Yeah?

The rubber boot looks split?
What brand/weight oil was used?
Did you fill it by pouring oil in when the shifter housing was removed ?(it does make it easy)
If you did, have you removed the filler plug to see if any excess oil comes out?

It is split. It was filling up with oil and oozing out through the split. I have since removed it so I can monitor things.

I just did a Google search for W56 Transmission vent and there's a bunch of threads on Marlin Crawler, IH8MUD and here. Looks like some people add a vent. Plenty of threads to read. Good luck and post up your fix.

I would love to see a link or two. I've exhausted my Google fu. I saw some references to similar issues, but no real answers or details to adding vents. Most threads seem to just kind of get forgotten, or the owner ends up selling the truck or installing a different transmission before coming to a solution.

The oil baffle is 33143-35020.
Is it possible it's upside down?
It also looks like it may have been redesigned. Google '33143-35020 toyota" and select images.

One thing worth mentioning, on that baffle where the bolts go through, there should be round metal spacers/sleeves that go in the hole to keep you from crushing the rubber too much.

I had a W56 B but, I don't remembering it looking like yours. Jimkola mentioned the baffle. I remember a sheet metal one on mine. Maybe look at Marlin Crawler trans ID section and see if you can figure out what trans you actually have. Good luck .
