I have a 1993 4Runner with the G58 transmission and I've been dealing with a pesky shifter base leak. After noticing fresh oil weeping down the sides of the trans, I removed the shifter base, cleaned it, and sealed it with RTV. The oil deflector is in place, all sealed with RTV.

Fast forward a couple couple weeks and it's leaking again. My first thought was my RTV failed, but there's fresh oil on top of the shifter base, so the oil must be leaking from higher up? There's oil 360° except between the two rear gussets.



There's clearly oil present on the two side pins which hold the shifter ball and a fair amount of oil surrounding the breather. As well, the trans is not overfilled and I'm using a marlin crawler shifter seat.

Is your vent clogged with dirt or not working pushing the oil out through the shifter.

It could very well be the front seal instead

The breather could be clogged, I'm not sure. The cap is plenty loose and wiggly. Are they cleanable? I have to get this shifter base off now which is practically glued in place. This leak is a PITA.

Also, what do you mean by front seal?

The front seal of the transmission where the input shaft comes out.

For some reason things are getting way to warm and it is not venting

Like any gear box that builds to much pressure it gets forced out someplace.

Like in a rear end with a blocked breather pushing it out past the seals.

It will find the easy place to push out.You sealed one placed so it just pushed out higher now.

Do you use the truck for work hauling heavy loads or pulling a trailer.

Did you check the fluid when it was cold out or when it was warm??

Had you changed the gear oil recently ??

you were level not pitched to the side opposite the plug??

Just how big of puddle is on the ground when you stop for a few minutes??

Truck is not used for hauling, fluid was changed ~2 months ago on a warm day although not sure if oil was at operating temp, also changed on level ground.

Before I sealed up the shifter, whenever it was driven and parked it would put a couple drops on the ground. I sealed the shifter then it stopped, and I caught it this time before it started dripping.

For what it's worth, I took the base off, removed the RTV, replaced it with paper gaskets, also cleaned out the breather and verified its functioning.

I hope this cures your problem.

the place the breather threads on was also free and clear of anything that might impede it`s working ??
