Hello!!

1992 electronic driven cluster, 22RE, AT, 4WD ~ Speedo has recently been failing, while odometer continues working fine. I have looked into testing of the VSS, (although some say there are two?) and removal of the gauge cluster, but considering the odo is working while the speedo is not can I assume this is the cluster's circuit board? I have looked and looked, but did not see a definitive answer on this for the electronically driven clusters. I would really like to have a reason to replace the cluster with the SR5 version, and can get one that matches my vehicle with low mileage on it. Problem is that I don't have time to rip into it right now and concerned that once I get around to it I won't be able to find the right cluster for a while.

Any advice is welcome, thanks!

 

Forgot to mention this! Currently on a cold start, middle of Summer 90 F the speedo never functions, but it begins working after several miles of driving and warming up. Doesn't seem like a cold solder would need to warm up more than ambient if the cab is that hot already, but possible the VSS would benefit from warmer transmission fluid? All I know for sure is the odo is rolling over while speedo needle sits at zero, and I don't really want to put it on stands to test the VSS while its still in the transfer case.

Have you checked speed sensor on transmission? My Speedo was doing same thing replaced sensor it’s cheep to buy, and easy.

 

It *WAS* the circuit board on the speedometer -- the top is brown and peeling all over the traces, just like what was shown in my link to someone else's repair job.

Got an SR5 cluster off ebay, pulled out the board to set the odometer today and its absolutely pristine! Bright green, no heat damage or leaky caps. Wasn't the VSS
