Hey everyone. New to the forum recently purchased my 2nd toyota a 1991 4runner that just finished 5vz swapping. Things is almost perfect just have some minor issues and looking for some advice.
1. Didn’t buy a crossover. Remade the stock one and I'm having an issue with it melting my speedometer cable. Clearance with firewall is pretty tight I was wondering what anyone did to solve this issue because I really dont wanna spend another 150$ on a cable again.
2. for people who have done this swap. What did you do about the cruise control cable being too short? I drive this thing long distance on the regular and i’d like to make mine work.
I put a 3.4 into my 88 pickup. I also reconfigured the stock crossover. It was from from a 99 4Runner. I reattached the tin heat shield. I also used header wrap on anything exposed. I know a lot of people say to never use header wrap but I am in dry AZ. I did this swap back in 2013 and haven't touched it since. Still looks the same. I used this stuff on the firewall.
this is what I ended up doing. Got my cable from the dealer last week and ended up heat wrapping the cable not the header and so far 500 miles and no melted cable yet!

I didn't use cruise control so I can't help you there. Good luck with your project.
I might try some heat insulation on the firewall and floor because after a long hill my floor by my gas pedal is pretty warm.
For anyone that cares. Lol I got the cruise working. I used a late 80’s jetski throttle cable ground down the sides to fit the existing cruise bracket. Pinned it in place to the firewall with an existing brake line clamp and attacked the cable to the existing one by just wrapping it around the screw and tightening it (this is only my initial test to see if this would work. Lol.) ziptied the existing cruise cable tensioner to the fender. Tested it around town and it works great! Will add updates after I use it on the highway! If anyone wants anymore info as to how I did this just let me know!
You're pretty resourceful to come up with that. If it works out safely, I think you should post up what you did with more details. Part numbers or model number to get the cable from. How you modified it.
I used an old clutch cable from my dirt bike and a cable clamp to attach it to the original cruise control cable. 10K miles later still working without issue.
