speedometer cable issue

The speedometer in our 1991 is bouncing badly at low speed. It gets better as speed increases but still not steady. Also makes a sort of whirling\chattering sound. I realize the cable most likely needs to be lubed. Detached the cable from the rear of the tranny and pulled on the cable. It won't come out. It moves just slightly in and out (like 2 mm) and we hit a hard stop. Can actually hear it "hitting" something. From what little I've seen, this should simply slide out and back in after we apply graphite. Does anyone have any ideas on what could be preventing the cable from coming out?

Toyota factory cables have a flange at the head that prohibits the removal of the cable core.

I don't think the core can be removed from the top either, because of the core end shape at the bottom.

I made a greasing adaptor by removing the guts from a speedo drive and tapping the housing to accept a grease zerk:::

Gotta be careful not to over-grease, because a speedo head full of goo is a Bad thing.

Thanks millball. I have seen videos of these cables coming right out. I’m puzzled. Thanks again

Many cars and trucks DO have cables where the core can be easily be pulled out.

Sadly, these factory Toyota cables are not such.

I would, and have, just replace the cable entirely. They're not all that expensive. Getting to the back of the speedo is really the hardest part of pulling the cable out. That, and feeding it back through to where it's going. Not really all that bad, if you watch where the old one is routed as you remove it.

Just me, though...

Here's a post I made a while back describing how to make a cable cleaner/luber for cheap from parts available at the hardware store.
