Speedometer cable replacement
I have a squeaky speedometer, that bounces around alot on my 1988 4runner. I have been reading through some of the other threads about this same subject, but I am pretty new at working on my truck and have been having trouble identifying parts with pictures in my haynes manual. I think a video would be really helpful. Does anyone have suggestions of places to see videos of someone doing this? or better pictures?

it is definitely making a squeaking noise that goes right with the bouncing of the needle. from what i have been reading on here its almost impossible to successfully oil the cable to stop it from squeaking so i was just planning on replacing it. would the bouncing be a loose cable as opposed to a dry cable?

I have the same issue on my 89 I was able to stop it for about a week with silicone spray on cable, but it just came back. Cable replacement seems tough but it's not too bad, you half to disconnect the ebrake cable inside the cab because the cable has a bracket on the floor for the speedo cable that it passes through. Then just unhook speedo cable from transfer case and remove cable retainers, there is one on top of the transmission which is pretty much impossible to see, but you can feel it if you reach up there. It's just two metal tabs that you bend open and closed. Then you just need to pull the instrument cluster and unhook cable from speedometer. Sorry I don't know of any videos or pics.
