Hello all. I recently bought a 92 single cab 22re 5speed truck. I bought it not running. Would cough to life on starting fluid.
I got it home and it randomly started after hitting the fuel tank. So I replaced the fuel pump. Still wouldn’t start. HOWEVER it was really random, after sitting for a week it would start up right away. But after a minute or so of running it would sputter off and not start again. I replaced the fuel filter yesterday and it will still not start. What else should I check?
I suspect the COR and/or the AFM. Most likely the COR if it won't start, or the AFM if it will start but won't keep running after it starts.
The COR is a relay, located right above the ECU behind the passenger side kick panel. Make sue the plug for the COR is clean and properly connected The COR is the Circuit Opening Relay, which controls the fuel pump. If the truck is in a wreck, it shuts the pump off to prevent the fuel system from staying pressurized with fuel. That way, the fuel pump won't keep pumping fuel out onto the ground, if the fuel system is broken open during the crash. A really important safety feature.
There's a switch in the AFM that closes when the the vane is open, even slightly. if it opens, like if the engine stops in a crash, it shuts the fuel pump off. Same as the COR, and for the same reason.
Check the wiring for those two items as well. The insulation on these older vehicles can get brittle, and the wire inside can break. Also, check the grounds, noth in the engine compartment, and in the cab, behind the two kick panels. very iimportent, especially the wire between the battery negative terminal, and the chassis. Critical.

thank you for this information, pat. I will have to check this out. When I jump B+ to FP it runs and drives fine. I tried to get it smoged and he failed me for the jumper wire.
