91 4runner headlight options

Hey all!

I read some of the topics about headlights trought the years, but I still have some questions. So, my headlights currently are like this:

Driver side:

And passenger side:

They are two different types and its awful at night, paired with the standart halogen bulbs. When I bought the truck, it had HIDs, but they destroyed the light switch and after replacing it I threw them away for the halogen ones.
No I wonder what should I do:

- go for fanless LED bulbs in the same housings? (probably not a good idea due to wrong geometry for the light)
- go for a complete set like the Holley Retrobright 5x7? (Costs a lot and can you replace the bulbs in future?)
- something else?

Thanks in advance for all the help!

I'm very happy with DOT approved led projector using an h5 (or 4) conversion harness.

I have an aftermarket front bumper so integrated LED signals are also convenient but I had to cut a resistor out of my blinker relay to slow down my flash speed to normal.

Night vision is near on par with my 2004 VW Passat, which I consider great compared to my excursion.

Looks nice, I saw that type of headlight around Youtube, I guess it is a good choice too. Cool 1st gen!

I bought a set of Hella housings for my ‘91 pickup and run these LED bulbs from Amazon:

SEALIGHT H4/9003 LED Bulbs, Super Bright Cool White Hi/Lo Beam, HB2 LED Bulbs Plug and Play. I’ve been very happy with the light provided. Sorry about the font change. Too late to fight it.

The problem is it looks like you have the "cool" teardrop-shaped lights. Bottum is not as wide as the top. So these options will likely give you a funky gap on the top side.

That sound really neat! As far I see these halogen and led housings (the retro looking ones) they seem to have about the same geometry in terms of the chrome curve inside the housing, which reflects the bulb light. Does this mean that actually you are getting similar light throw in your housing with your new led bulbs, as you were with the old halogens? Because I really dont want to spend between 300 and 400 bucks just to get almost the same housings with led bulbs included.

I had no clue about this, thanks for sharing, I have a gap on the bottom right now, but it is not bothering me. Plus the plastic mask is moving if I push it.

Just letting you know you may run into more fitment problems than just a gap. I am not sure. I got lucky and got the square lights. However I am struggling to find a clip solution for my front grill. every single clip is missing its insert pin to hold it to the body sigh... Among a major clutch gremlin...

Same here. The previous owner used zip ties to hold the grill at its place. By the way, here in Europe, there are far less options for 4Runners. Beside 2-3 cheap seal beam solutions, I found only Hella 1AE 003 427-011 as a housing. I think it will fit pretty well, here are the dimentions:

And yep, europeans don't offer the H4 harness kit as well. You guys in the States have a MUCH better market. Salute!

That is very kind of you! However, I got good news - I tried installing led bulbs in the current housings and what a surprise: they work. Low beam and high beam work and shift as normal from the light switch . I guess some previous owner convert the truck and now it seems it is simple as plug and play Meanwhile, I ordered the Hella housings and they will arrive next week. Will update the thread with fresh pics once I install them in place. Cant wait

Toyota grille clips style on my 86. I've used very thin tie wraps before.

Ebay has a load of typical body panel clips and screws. They may not call them Toyota, but the industry uses the same styles, so keep looking if ever needed.

I just replaced the plastic clip that connected the passenger side door handle to the latch opening rod. Got a pack of 4 on Ebay. It was a weird double 90 degree rod clip. It was listed for a Mazda, but looked the same and worked.
