Happens about once a week and conditions seem totally random. Gas leaks out (and were talking about a lot of gas- its flowing). From the line thats pictured. This line runs up along the passenger side of the firewall- there are 3 hard lines - 2 paired together that I believe are the main gas lines and then this one which terminates in this loose fuel hose. When I open the gas cap air comes rushing in and the leaking stops. I drilled an additional vent hole in the cap to make sure enough air can flow through but the issue persists...
It could also be that the leaking stops because Ive turned the car off in order to pop the cap off- I should try this later today but its currently out of gas haha.
Any advice would be appreciated. BTW- this is a 93 with a 99 5VZ in it.

The 3 lines to your tank are fuel supply, fuel return from the regulator, and the tank vent that goes to the EVAP emissions, IE charcoal canister.
the vent line is only connected to the very top of the fuel tank and should only have raw fuel coming out if your tank is over full or parked on an incline.
the fuel return from the regulator should have a down-pipe in the tank to prevent noise when fuel is flowing back to the tank.
I think you have 2 lines crossed and whomever did the 3.4 swap didn't bother with the EVAP lines and charcoal canister.
I wouldn't be surprised if you also have an EVAP code and a check engine lite on.
Thanks so much for your reply and I do have an EVAP code! I just checked. Here is another image of the line- the circled hardline is where the first image of the fuel hose is coming from, there is also a strange empty rubber inlet going into the firewall which look like it should have something going into it. Just trying to figure out what to do next.
The mystery hose, marked with a ? in the picture looks like a drain of some sort. Like the drain for the AC system in the cab, or similar. From the look of it, it never has, and never will have, anything plugged into it, unless you put a cork in it for some reason.
Best thing to do is go to the other side, and see if you can find the hose, and trace it to where it goes. I wager you'll conclude the same. It's a drain.
Just my opinion, and we all know hat those are worth...

I have an 88 with a 99 3.4. I used the 88 tank and pump. The lines off the tank are like already mentioned. The supply from the pump to the filter and on to the engine. The return from the engine goes to the line that terminates in the tank at the top of the fuel pump cover. (on my tank anyway) The vent line at the tank is more forward at the top of the tank. It goes up to the charcoal canister.
The charcoal canister also has other hoses. One goes to a solenoid valve, another to the air box I think and one goes down and just vents inside the frame. That's how it came off the 99 4Runner donor. I can probably get pics if you need them.
I "think" you can get a light not only because it's hooked up wrong but, for venting the cap like you did.
I had the entire running (rolled) truck for my swap and hooked everything up as pulled from the donor. I had no CEL's and still don't. The engine is now in my current build but, the fuel lines and charcoal canister is still in my 88 if you need pics or info.
I agree with 2ToyGuy about the rubber grommet. Looks like the A/C condensate drain. My other trucks had a short tube hanging down out of it.

I spoke to ORS yesterday and they suggested the fuel pressure regulator might be going bad. I’d love to see an image of where this loose line on my truck is on your truck.
My donor was a 99 4Runner with manual transmission. My truck is an 88 regular cab that had a 22RE. I didn't have any fuel lines that big in diameter.
My son had a 91 regular cab that we put a 93 extended cab on. I modified the fuel tank and it was just like the tank and lines on my 88. It LOOKS larger in diameter than what I remember. Maybe it's just the pic.
Have you followed the lines to confirm what they're connected to?
I'll go out and look at my 88 and I have the tank for my 86 build in the garage. I'll try to get pics and more info for you.
I don't understand the bad regulator suggestion. If I remember correctly, if it goes bad it will leak into a hose that goes to the air box or intake. I will look at that as well.
I had the stock air box from the 99 4Runner on the 88. My 88 is now a donor for my linked 86 Xtra Cab build so some things are taken apart right now. I'll get out there in a few to see what I can find out for you.
Green Dot is fuel line from the pump. I obviously changed things and put my filter in easy reach. Blue dot is fuel return from engine to tank. Yellow dot is my vent line between tank and the charcoal canister.
