Smelling gas.....

After driving my truck around town I can detect a strong scent of gas...uhhh...gasoline. I can only smell the gas on the right side of the truck. There isn't any gas leaking. The smell seems to be emanating directly from the gas door area. The gas cap is on tightly......The gas cap however is a plastic replacement as the OEM cap is long lost.....I've been using this cap for 2+yrs and have never smelled any gas coming from the gas door area before....Is there anything which can break or leak gas from this area??? Should I just buy a Toyota gas cap for a Toyota Seal and 5 extra hp?

Hey Roger,
Maybe you can just try buying a replacement gas cap for that replacement gas cap.....Maybe the seal has gone bad on the current one. Since that's the cheapest, I'd try that first.

howdy roger, not knowing what your gas tank setup is like, my suggestion is to crawl under or around your truck, and take a peek at all the gas connections, ie: filler tube to neck and tank, sending line from tank, vent tube tank to neck, etc, and see what kind of shape they are in, by all means try the gas cap first though, as it is inexpensive, and easier than the possible dropping of the tank you might have to do... good luck

Salue,

Do you park your 4R west of the UW? After seeing your Whistler pics, I'm pretty sure I've seen your 4R around (I live in the U-District)....A friend of mine just got an '88 4R and we're planning to head up to the mountains for some fun in the spring...you should come too.....If we wake up early enough, maybe we could catch Corey on one of his Greenwater days.......

Hey Roger,
I've moved out of the U district a little after I graduated. I still go over to the AVE sometimes to eat though and I try to park on the free spots(11th?)..Just drop me an email when you guys go up on a run, I would love to go wheelin' with you guys. It gets boring going by yourself and you're a little more hesitant to do tougher obstacles, you know what I mean? We should go on a Snow run, whatcha think?

several things can be going on here
1) check the cap or have it test at a place that does inspections
2) after you fill up look around you rig for drips possible line leaking
3) the charcoal canister in the engine bay coud be bad
i think if you have a bad gas cap the sys gets over pressurized and the fuel goes to this charcoal canster and bleeds out. dont quote me on this tho its 2:30am
