Recently my ‘88 pickup quit on me. I’m by no means a mechanic, but I do know my way around a 22re quite well. Just stumped on this one. I haven’t had time to really take a look and I’m not really sure where to start. Where this issue originally started was my oil pan gasket blew and I needed to replace that. While on my way to a shop to replace it myself my trucks wheels locked up and died on me and it didn’t start afterwards. About a month later it started but sounded absolutely horrible. Starting to think it’s a timing chain problem. When starting there is an obvious metallic rattling sound coming from the engine. Before the final breakdown my pickup would die on me when pushing on the gas and letting off the clutch.
if anyone could give me a place on where to start or any help on a diagnosis would be amazing. Thanks!

Welcome to YotaTech. It sure sounds like you've had a major mechanical failure. You could try "barring over" the engine (put a socket on a "breaker" bar) to listen. I'd at least try draining the oil; if you have bits of sparkly stuff your next step is to drop the pan and take a look.

 

Could use a bit more information. 1) When you say the wheels locked up, was it due to the engine, or the drivetrain? That is, if you pushed the clutch in, would it roll? If so, it's engine-related, if not, then the drivetrain is the culprit. 2) Since you say the oil pan gasket blew, did you check to see if there's still a reasonable amount of oil in it?

As suggested, trying to turn the engine by hand should tell you a lot. Easier to do if you pull the spark plugs...
