custom fuel tank fab
Advanced apologies; Will also try to check in fab forum.
I've been trying to get a fuel tank fabbed up. I found outfit in Iowa(?) that will make one but their 'salesman' doesn't seem to concerned about talking to me.
So I'm trying to find another welder. I've already got the dimensions I need and pretty much have it drawn up. I just would like a fab shop a bit more responsive. Maybe under $1k cost means I should grow some more patience?
Anywho does anyone here know of any shops? I want Al (aloomineum as they say in GB) or stainless. IA shop said stainless is just a cheap as mild steel now anyway..
TIA

How did you determine the design of the tank? Fuel tanks aren't just metal boxes; they're the result of a hundred years of design improvement. In a collision, they're designed to deform without leaking, all to keep the fuel in and the fire out to the maximum extent possible.
Years ago, I represented several auto manufacturers in "post-collision fuel-fed fire" cases (think: Ford Pinto). All of my cases had horrific injuries, but the case with the worst injuries involved a pickup with a shop-made secondary tank that did very poorly compared to the OEM tank.
Be careful out there.

Yeah kind of along the lines of Scopes comment when I looked into it nobody makes custom fuel tanks anymore for liability reasons. You'd probably have some luck getting a fab shop to build you a custom water tank. There are some good Australian manufacturers of long range tanks. I just ended up going with the gas can myself.

Hi kids.
Sorry. Could not login. PC problems. Boomers. I tell 'ya.
I actually have found a few custom fuel tank builders - not 'water tank holders'. At least so says their websites. Seems most are for drag racers or something.
As far as the design goes I want enough to equal the factory. Plus it has to sit up out of the way Give lot of room for exhuast (should be 6 or 8" away).
I will put a skid plate below (probably never hit anyway). And its above a line drawn from axle to those lower hanging bumper bracket thingys. And I am adding an extra cross member in rear for further protection. The 99 I bought for motor was slammed really hard. And although the back on cab is trashed - can not get tailgate open no way- the frame per se is not really compromised. A bit bent I think maybe an inch or so.
So unless I get smashed by a yuuge truck I should be good. (Yes will have to move from CO) Waay too many dumasses.
Hopefully I will be able to get a bumper built/bought soon that can carry the spare. Did I mention it will essentially be up where spare was?
And it IS NOT a primary fuel tank. Will only be used for extended trips. And it will only be a transfer tank. It will NOT feed the fuel system. But will have a factory fuel guage and "LO" light. Plus already have wires so aux fuel switch is ALSO protected by COR. So still think its a bit better than a couple of 'jerry' cans tied on back.
Pretty much got the second fuel door installed. Well door not bolted on 'cuz I need to have access to fill pipe to fit together. And then inside goes back together. It looks worlds better than I had any right to expect. Only fly in soup is an idea for rock protection on fill pipe. I had fixed a gash in wheel well where a rock had punctured hole into cab.

I know of someone that took the stock 2wd single cab gas tank, turned it sideways and it fit between the frame rails where the factory spare went. Made 2 simple brackets to bolt it on and extended all the plumbing and electrical back and it worked perfectly. It hung down about as much as it did in the factory location. With a simple crossmember added and a few tubes ran back to a tube bumper and a skidplate, it was fully protected. No I don't have pictures of it. This was 10+ years ago now

What about a fuel tank out of a newer Tacoma?
I have no idea on the measurements, and whether it'd fit, but at least you know it's been thoroughly tested( Toyota, NHTSA, Insurance Institute) It wouldn't double your capacity, but it could offer a 50-60% improvement.
