Another 22re cranks, does not fire, fuel injectors not firing??
Hey guys,
1987 4runner with a 22RE. I’m at a loss.
I have a crank , no start issue.
This truck has been in the family but has not run on it’s own, in 16 years.
I rebuilt the engine and installed it about 5 years ago.
It ran Rough but had some fuel injector leaking issues.
so fast forward to now.. I just installed new rebuilt injectors , orings and seals.
I drained the old gas and installed new gas
it only cranks , but does not start
so I had a buddy come over with the exact same truck and we swapped over the usual suspects 1 part at a time.
we swapped:
Air flow meter
TPS
fuel injector resistor
igniter and coil
swapped ecm’s
air by-pass valve
still doesnt Fire up...
now for fun, we pulled off a vaccum hose, I ran my own hose with brake cleaner as fuel supply, and I can get the truck to run of brake cleaner, and it runs and idlesas long as I keep spraying, it keeps running great!
so that leads me to say it’s a fuel issue still, why are my injectors NOT firing...?
if I crack the fuel bolts and crank the motor, fuel squirts out! So I have fuel and spark...
I tested continuity from the igniter wires to Ecm, I have continuity. I tested wires and grounds (where the common corrosion is in the wire loom) through the fire wall and I have Continuity.
I pulled off the plug wire to Injector #1, with the key on, I am seeing 12v on both wires? Is that correct?! I’m not seeing a ground signal??
so what else can I do to test and see if I have injector pulse...??
tom- (ps I’m Not Drunk 🥴

No start
I’d suspect a signal is not getting to where it needs to. A known good VAFM signal still needs to allow fuel to be pumped/sprayed. There’s a fuel cut signal from the VAFM that allows fuel to pump only when vacuum pulls open the vane door in the sensor. I forget how exactly it works, but with the key on and propping the VAFM door open you can hear the fuel pump run if it’s working. I like testing my sensor signals at the ecu pig tails to be sure they’re at least getting there. Just a quick idea

A few guesses.
Check for possible rodent damage. There's a component that mounts on the right inner fender under the hood that regulates the sequential firing of the injectors. Also a good place for rodents to hang out. i's check the wiring especially there. But any wiring under the hood can fall victim to gnawing
Another possibility is fuel pressure. Is the pump working? And if so, is the pickup in the tank/fuel.filter/etc. clogged with rust from the tank.
Lotsa possibilities after 16 years of inertness.

I'd do the dead-simple check of fuel pressure. Replace the fuel return line with a line to a suitable container. Start the fuel pump with the jumper in the diagnostic port. I get about 1/2 liter/min out the fuel return line. If you get nothing, your pump may be giving you enough pressure to leak when you loosen fittings, but not enough to run the engine. If you do get fuel out, you might want to do an actual fuel pressure check. You'll need a 10mm banjo bolt adapter; the most common fuel pressure check point on the 22re is the CSI.
The injectors open when one lead is grounded by the ECU; the other lead is always at battery voltage. FWIW, the injectors all open at the same time ("sequential" multi-port injection was still in the future back in 1987). Earlier (1986? 1987?) 4runners used injectors that required a resistor (silver box on the right apron). Are your rebuilts the right ones for your rig? Have you tried a "noid" light on any injector connector to see if you're getting pulse?

Yeah, my bad. I'm never quite sure what to call that big ass resistor. It's close to bulletproof, but the exposed wires can be chewed.
All my thoughts above were just random guesses., be interesting to see actual test results to give some sort of direction.
