99 Land Cruise- engine light

My 99 Land Cruiser's engine "malfunction" lamp lit up on the dash yesterday and I suddenly lost acceleration. The engine would idle at about 800-900 rpm, but no more, even if the accelerator was all the to the floor. 800-900 rpm was the max. Fortunately, I was only 5 blocks from my house and crawled home at 10 mph.

The car has been well maintained by the dealer and all service has been performed at the recommended intervals. This is the first time I have been stranded by the car not operating. The owner's manual offers no explanation on the illuminated dash light problem other than to go to the dealer.

Does anyone know why the light came on and what the underlying problem is? If so, is it an expensive problem? I suspect I will have to tow it to the dealer on Monday. Thanks.

Welcome here, too bad it's for such a drastic problem. I searched Alldata TSB's and Recalls, and the IH8MUD forums and found nothing similar. I've owned a string of FJ-100's and nothing ever went wrong, ever.

My only suggestion is to do a system restore by pulling the battery cables off for a few minutes and then hooking up again. Maybe that will help long enough to get you to the dealership. That's a very odd problem you've got there. Please post here with what you find. It would be a first in my book.
