Are gaskets needed for 22re front cover?

Thoughts on whether gaskets must be used on the front timing cover? It's two machined surfaces so I used silicone, now starting to second guess myself. If it was solid axle truck I wouldn't have a problem with silicone, but IFS is a real pain in the **** if it leaks after putting motor back in.

Thanks.

I don't think it's absolutely necessary just as long as you used some high quality gasket maker. When I did cylinder head gasket and timing chain on my 92 22RE 3.5 years ago, I did use the timing cover gaskets coated with Permatex High Tack on both sides. No leaks so far.

As I understand the set up, the "gasket" for the front cover is just a thin piece of paper. I would personally use a good RTV type gasket materiel.
That's just my opinion, though.

I like using the factory paper gaskets with GasketCinch, But that's just my preference.
I think sealant should work fine as long as the surface is properly cleaned.

That's reassuring, thanks for replies. Never had an issue with silicone but thought I would ask.
