I've done two rebuilds over the years and have never used these large gaskets (circled in red) that seem to come in every 22re gasket set. What are these for? Am I doing something massively wrong by not using them? I can't recall ever removing gaskets like this during disassembly either though. I can name every other gasket in this picture except for these two.
Those gaskets are for the PCV oil baffle in the inside of the valve cover. Both gaskets do the same thing but for different style of valve cover baffles. They just include both styles to cover all 22R-E engines.
Most people never change these gaskets, but may be a good idea now that most of these engines have piles of miles on them. It is good to clean out the "crud" too.

The gasket goes between the baffle cover (bottom) and the valve cover (top).
I do not remember how the cover attaches. I thought some attached with rivets and other attached with screws.
