86 Gas tank replacement

1986 4x4, x-cab, 22R Carb, manual trans.
Had to drop my tank to replace a busted brake line that I could not find the leak in due to mud/dirt collection around the front of the gas tank. Finally found the leak once I installed a new master cylinder. Noted the brake line had been leaking for a while with the fluid being contained by the mud/dirt. When cleaning everything up with the water hose to reinstall the tank a hole about the size of a quarter appeared. Ordered a new Precision tank from O'reillys. Sending unit and new gasket mounts to the tank with no issues. Go to install the suction tube assembly and I can only get 3 of the 5 screws to match up. I can make it work by elongating the two holes. Do you guys think this is safe or will I have to be worried about vapor/fumes? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I plan to take the new tank back today for the sales associate to look at. Thanks
