Changing original paint to a modern color. Yea or nay?
I am currently priming & block sanding my entire truck getting it ready for a paint job. Factory color is white which I am not a big fan of. Truck is almost stock besides the PO-installed Smittybilt tube bumpers, minor lift, and OEM alloy wheels (door jam sticker indicates truck came with steel wheels). 31" tires will be my choice after wheels are refinished. Bed is Rhino-lined and I will be installing black bed rails after the paint job. So this is not a stock-restored truck like we see on BAT. I am not concerned about decreasing the value by changing the color. But the purist in me says I really need to keep the original color,
I really like this color Porsche uses called Chalk, which is actually a retro Porsche color. Kinda light gray but still close enough to white. I am not painting the jams, underhood, etc. So that's another negative, these parts will still be the original white. How do you think this modern color would look on a 92? My model is DLX, so grill & door/tailgate handles are chrome, which may look odd with this color? My interior is gray. Please chime in with your opinions and thoughts.
Thanks!
In certain lighting the color does look more whiter than gray:
Color match, if it's enough you can tell the difference between the Porsche and Toyota colors it will maybe bother you. Something you won't "not be able to see"..
First, it’s your truck, paint it anything you want.
But since you asked.
1) I wouldn’t change colors unless I was prepared to do it right, including door jams under hood, and radiator core support. I just hate opening the doors and seeing a different color, it’s always bugged me.
2)a more modern color is ok, but I’d find one in the Toyota family. Something on a Tacoma, Tundra,FJCruiser, etc. it just makes it flow better.
I certainly prefer the factory color options, they just look right to me.
I know it doesn't bother some people, but I really don't like when I open the hood or doors and see a different color than the exterior body paint. the paint job looks kinda half-baked if you know what I mean.
If you are gonna do a Porsche color go with signal orange!!
I keed, man, your truck do what you want, I know how you feel.
I have a white 88 that I look at and go,Hmm, that would look great in (insert flavor of the week here).
Then I start thinking about the jambs, engine bay inside the cab, back of the cab, the bed, etc, and white doesn't look so bad.
Lot of work to do it right.
If you go with chalk, black out the grill and all the chrome and go with grey wheels, copy what is on the gt3

or positive, you can easily paint the truck with the original color again if you change your mind later.

I think it would look good, If you like it, go for it.
Thanks for the thorough reply. I am not going to do the base & clear myself. Spraying with a gun takes patience and a steady hand, I am getting better at it, but it's an art which I will never master like a pro. Plus, my "paint booth" is just an opened-door garage, all it takes is one fly to land on the wet paint or clear to screw up the whole job.
I like modern vehicle colors. Subaru, jeep, toyota all have nice colors now. Subtle
I have 2 forest greenish 90s toyotas and id love to have them painted someday.
are you going to wheel the truck? Will you be scratching the paint up?
it sounds like youve done all the prep work already?
but i agree if you dont do the doorjams and stuff that may bug you some day
I vote stock white, or if you really want to go wild go with 040 Super White. You'll likely tire of the the new color anyway after awhile. Going with that Porche color is going to hurt reliability pretty badly.
