1989 Toyota Pickup

I have a 1989 Toyota Pickup (v6 3.0). Hit a deer about 2 weeks ago and everything still worked afterwards. I go to get new housing units for front bumper turn signals. Turn signals worked after I hit deer. Go to put new units on and new bulbs and now I don’t have turn signals at all. I can’t pass inspection without them.
Since the turn signals don’t work, my tail lights stay on constantly. I have to take the hot wire off the battery now. My brother thinks the turn signal switch is “smoked” on the steering wheel column. I checked all of my fuses (under hood and driver side kick panel), they check out good. I was thinking it was a relay but according to Advance Auto and Autozone they rarely go out. I need HELP guys. Thnx a bunch

Why did you replace the bulbs if old ones were working? Maybe the new bulbs burnt out (if they were the wrong wattage)? Have a multimeter, or even a test light?

Yea I have a test light. And I replaced the old bulbs because instead of having orange lense with clear bulb, I got clear lense with orange bulb. I put old bulbs back in and they work still. 1156’s...Problem is the bulbs won’t come on now and the tail lights stay on constantly now

Thinking maybe the switch has gone bad...

So even with the old bulbs back in the front or test light on the front sockets, you are not getting any voltage?

according to the test light I have voltage. I am using a battery powered test light from advance auto. What I need is a multimeter. My headlights come on when I flip the switch, so does my corner marker lights, 4 way hazards come on but no turn signal/ running lights, however, the tail lights are on. Just weird how all this is happening now.

Paul, I think it may the brake switch above the brake pedal....the reason of why my brake lights are staying on. I am gonna order a new one and see if that takes care of the brake light issue, and if it doesn’t then I will order a new turn signal switch and if that doesn’t work then I will have to run down the wiring gremlin. Only thing I can do. I have exhausted all my other avenues so far..why not spend kore money in a truck? 😂

Pull the plug leading to that switch and see if the brake lights go out before you invest in a new switch.

I will check that. I was already looking up switches too. Not too bad on the price. I did check where the button was at. It is OEM. It has completely broke off so that could be the problem. I will have to check it tomorrow. It is already too late to do it. But best believe I will though. I will keep ya updated too. Thanx for the help man. I am glad I joined this forum.

Also, you said the "test light" has a battery. That may be a continuity tester and not a voltage tester. When you touch the alligator clip to the tip of the tool, does it light up? If so, that is a continuity tester which is good for testing grounds, but not for voltage. I strongly suggest a multimeter. Those red ones at Harbor Freight are only a few bucks but work fine for most applications.

I haven’t even tried that yet. I definitely will check that as well. It has a red LED though. I know some do check for grounds and some for voltage/ hot. I am gonna go buy a voltmeter tomorrow when I get off work. Hey, at least my turn signals work 😂. I’m just hoping that when I pull that brake switch plug in off that it cuts the brake lights off. Then I will know that I need a new BL switch. I really don’t want to have to keep jacking with this antique 😂😂. So as it stands right now, I have to put the new stuff on as well...front bumper, lower valance, ball joints, spark knock piece, and get it 4 way aligned...Also, speedometer cable busted but it still functions...so just the small stuff which is a pain in the ass but I will check the tester and get a VM...and go from there... I really do appreciate your help man.

That was the issue Paul. The brake switch is faulty AF. Don’t know how that occurred but as soon as I took the clip off the brake lights went off. I kept having to undo the hot terminal of my AGM in order to keep the battery from dying out which I am about to get a new one but that was the issue. Now there is another switch located on the brake pedal, do u know what that is?

Can you take a pic of what you're looking at? I took a quick peek of my 92 and only see one switch.
