Aftermarket fuel tank

Has anybody used an aftermarket fuel tank. I have a 1991 4wd pickup that needs one.

Thank you sir! That is what I needed to know. I got this truck not running for 7 years. It is amazingly rust free, except for inside the fuel tank. I opened it up yesterday and never saw such a rusted mess in my life.

No Lie. Check Rock Auto. They have them for the 80's era trucks.

Rockauto is the place! It should come tomorrow or Friday. With luck, the truck might be running next week.

The Spectra premium fuel tank came today from Rockauto. It is a nice looking tank. It does not have the drain plug provision that the original tank had. I believe that I will add one and paint it flat black as the original tank was before I install it. The fuel pump bracket and sending unit aren't here yet, so I have time to mess around with it some.

true, no drain plug. i’d forgotten that. but it isn’t a feature i need. the pump can be drained using the fuel pump jumper and a hose connected to the tank return line off of the FPR, directed into a suitable container.

did this with my ‘97 corolla prior to junking it, although there is no jumper.

I was surprised to see the drain plug on the original tank, to be sure. I think it mighr be useful to.me though, so i will add it now while i can without a lot of hassle.

true, but in a 4r, the fuel pump can be swapped/replaced without dropping the tank, so if the tank needs to be emptied, there is a simple solution. just put in a functional pump.

We occasionally lose power for a few days due to weather events, although admittedly not very often. If the outage lasts a few days, I usually start siphoning gasoline from the tank of my vehicle to run the generator. This truck tank holds 19 gallons and is set up from the factory for convenient access. For me, it's worth the $5.99 for the Dorman drain plug kit. It's actually the first vehicle I have come across that had a factory drain plug in the fuel tank. I was really surprised when I saw it there. The guard plate under the tank is recessed for it, so I have no doubt its OEM.

I actually just installed the Spectra premium fuel tank from rockauto, bolted right up, no hassle at all!

I went ahead and replaced the fuel pump bracket, sending unit, filter neck and vent. (looked like my sending unit hadn’t worked in years)
