In my Haynes Manual, there is a wiring diagram for a low fuel indicator. However, I have never seen a light go on. Has anyone ever seen a light come on?

 

I believe it depends on the Accessories package of your vehicle, but I could be wrong. Someone with more knowledge will chime in I'm sure.

I think its part of the sr5 package. Mine will come on when Im down to about 2 gallons of fuel.

 

Okay that makes sense. My cluster was swapped from an SR5 so it might have one. I've just never seen it on.

 

I forgot they even had one. I remember my 88 dlx light used to come on but my 87 sr5 that I drive now, ive never seen the light and im sure ive had it down far enough, maybe I need to test this.

 

On my 87 pickup I've seen the lite come on a few times. I did a test once where I waited until it was on good and solid, then drove around the block the gas station was on until the engine sputtered. I got 13 miles out of it. Be wary though, the light will come on with deceleration, or angling the nose of the truck down with less than about 2-3 gallons in the tank. Like coming into a top lite or stopping going down a hill.

There is a bulb for low fuel in the cluster on my 92 DLX, but tracing it back to the contact terminal shows there is no wire in that plug slot. As others have said, it was included with the SR5 model as standard equipment. Not an option for the Base model and maybe was an option on the DLX since the DLX does share the upgraded cluster with a tach from and SR5.

 

That's exactly right. Mine will come on when Im close to empty and make a corner.

 

The Low Fuel Light is turned on by a switch attached to the fuel senders of equipped models, and is a separate device from what sends the fuel level to the gauge.

All Gauge clusters have the spot for the Low Fuel Light, but only work when the truck has the fuel sender with the switch.

Check the sender wiring. If you see 3 wires coming out you probably have the wiring for the low fuel light. I just went through this with my 86 DLX 4Runner. I was convinced that I had the 14 gallon fuel tank because I needed 12.5 gallons to fill up when I reached empty, the last mark on the gauge. I have just assumed that my 86 didn't have the wiring for the low fuel light that was in my SR5 swapped gauge cluster, or the sender didn't work. I knew the bulb was good because I checked it when I put in the cluster.

Long story short (lots of drama and now I have a spare 17 gallon tank, sender, hanger and skid), I convinced myself that I did indeed have a 17 gallon tank. I found my sender is a 3 wire sender. I checked all the wiring and could get the light to come on in the gauge cluster. I threw caution to the wind and drove well past empty. I mean the needle is down touching E and well below the lowest mark on the gauge. The light finally came on and required 14.5 gallons to fill up.

 

I can confirm with 100% certainty that my 1993 22re dlx does not have the light activated. I have a brand new sender and have run the tank dry without the light ever coming on.

 

Somewhere there is a rule about this, maybe it's actually an unspoken one and not a safety board thing?

The lights come on when you are down to a 30 or 60 mile range calculated off the MPG avg.

I feel like I should know this, but I'm old and forgetful or something.

 

Did you have a 3-wire harness to the sender? Does your cluster have a low fuel bulb? There is a FSM test for the circuit.

 

my truck is a 22re deluxe with the factory upgrade tach gauge cluster. The bulb is in there but I’ve never seen it come on. I can’t answer for sure what sender my truck has. I know for sure it is the one it left the factory with.

 

Here’s a pic from my experimental run. It was completely dry 50 miles later. Light never came on.

 

Same as my 92 DLX. Bulb is there, but tracing it back to the terminal contact on the cluster shows no wire on plug for that contact. Seemed like a lot of work to run a wire from the tank to the cluster, so I just ended up using that light as an indicator that I have my fog lights on. Some here mentioned that the float assembly is different for SR5s, but all sites I searched has the same part# for any 92 4x4 pickup?

 

I have been able to confirm that the SR5 models do in fact have a different gauge sender than all the rest. So only the SR5 V6 models have the fuel light activated.

 

Do you have a part #? All I see for a 92 is 83320-80179 for all 4x4s, no matter the model or engine?

 

ok, 20 year plus years of Toyota/Lexus parts guy experience here. If you look up North American built trucks, they were all deluxe models hence the same part number. If you look up Japanese built trucks from the same generation you will see the VZN110 SR5 has its own gauge sender part number. The Japanese built deluxe all have same sender as the NAP trucks.
