Check engine light 92 pickup 4x4

I have a 1992 Toyota pickup 4x4, manual transmission with a recently rebuilt 22RE. The check engine light comes on as soon as I give it gas when driving and gives me an air flow meter code. Truck runs great but the light is annoying. Anyone have any luck replacing the air flow meter and the truck still run great? I’ve been reading reviews online and not many people are happy with the rebuilt air flow meters. Is replacing my only option? Thanks!

Knowing your code and specific tests you've done might help..

Assuming you have code 31 (oh, c'mon! Why would you want to make us all guess?), that's "Open or short detected continuously for 500 msec. or more in volume air flow meter circuit."

Replacing is probably your worst option (almost as bad as reading reviews online). You have an open or short in the circuit. It might be in the VAF, which you can test directly with your multimeter. If the VAF passes the FSM tests, you've just saved yourself $700! So your open/short is in the wiring back to the ECU.

Of course, you've already checked that the VAF is plugged in, haven't you?

Here is how you test the VAF: http://web.archive.org/web/201209071...33volumeai.pdf

Mine did show some open spots on the meter between E2 & Vs when moving vane so bought a rebuilt one. Tested the rebuilt one and it did the same thing so returned it. My car was not throwing a code, I was tracking down an idle problem.
