Hello,

My sister drove her truck through a flooded section of road and took on a large amount of water. Blew the head gasket spectacularly at #4 and #3 cylinders and luckily only bent one valve. Finally got everything back together, head was checked for cracks and surfaced at the shop, been going to them for years they do good work. Truck is idling fine but bogs randomly when driving and is blowing white smoke. Not losing coolant so far so I assume what ever water got into the exhaust is still working it's way out.

Truck is 1993 Toyota Pickup with a 22RE. Question is, how sensitive is the Throttle Position Sensor and would it be damaged by water? Or could the Mass Air Flow sensor be damaged as well? Not an EFI guy, I like carburetors.

Just rechecked the diagnostic, threw two codes (ll...llll, lll...l) am I reading these correctly as codes 24 and 31? or are they 2, 4, and 31? I hate computers. Thanks again!

 

First things first, did you drain the fuel tank and replace the fuel filter? put any HEET in it? Or did it not go that deep or that long?

 

She drove in, water was up to the rocker panels (2wd pickup), and stalled. Then she pushed it out. Wasn't in the water that long. She said she was pushing a wave in front which is where the water got into the intake. Fuel was almost empty when I got it so I added a five gallons, didn't change much. I don't think any water got into the fuel system and fresh gas should have improved it if it did, right?. Been doing more searching and 24 and 31 trouble codes are for the Air Flow Meter.

 

Okay, I had a good long dose of RTFM and seem to have determined that the air flow meter is busted. The white smoke seems to be diminishing and seems to be separate from the bogging hesitation issue. But I will update if anything interesting happens.
