In the overseas market who is the competition for the surf since I am assuming GM, Ford, etc are not as big? Just curious

Here in Ireland the Mitsubishi Pajero/Shogun is pretty popular. Lots of Landrover Discoveries around too. But The Hilux Surf is not well known here. They are all JDM imports. I think the most popular 4x4 in Ireland is the landcruiser. They are everywhere!! Not a bad thing though as the Hilux Surf (3rd Gen) shares the same chassis and 3.0TD engine.

 

In other parts of the globe, the Nissan Terrano/Patrol and Mitsubishi Challenger/Pajero are the Surf's main competitors, IIRC..

Mitsubishi Pajero and Delica wagon
and the Mazda's
Isuzu I beleive got out of the "s.u.v." market
on a daily basis I see plenty of Chevy's and J@#p's bimmers and volvos Ford's Don't seem real popular out here though.
I actually saw that new porsche what was that name Jalapeno
