Rear bearing issue

so I picked up some longfields, grabbed a rear wheel bearing kit as well. I don’t have a press so I took the new shafts and my old shafts with the bearing/brakes on it to a shop in town that said they had the Toyota bearing tool. Get them back, looks good. Go to install into truck tonight and after bolting the backing plate to the axle housing, if I turn the axle it grinds. If I unbolt it, no grindind and spins freely. 1987 4Runner, factory rear axle no mods other than FJ60 wheel cylinders and a v6 3rd. I am assuming the bearing was installed incorrectly but the snap ring is on and the collar is there so I have no clue. Any help please.

Did you determine that the old and the new axles are exactly the same length from where the bearing seats to the axle spline end??

I've heard of some aftermarket axles that need to be shortened a smidge.

yes axles are the same, I know the Yukon’s have to be cut but longfields are a direct bolt in.

Small update, upon close inspection I noticed the outer wheel seals are not seated all the way (notice in above picture) . I think this may be linked to the issue.
