definition of "prerunner"
i've heard the term "prerunner" used several times. what is this?
also, i've seen some people use a lot of acronyms in what they write. will someone run through the list of commonly used acronyms and what they mean? i'm too old to keep up with computer jargon. i mean, jeeze, i'm already 22!

To multi million dollar race teams a pre-runner is a cheaper, less powerfull truck used to pre-run the course before the actual race.
To the other 99.9% of the world a pre-runner is sometimes your only truck used for work, getting groceries, going to the mall, going to school and for playing out in the desert.

Pre-Runners are usually 2WD right?
I say that not because Toyota offers their 2WD as a Pre-Runner, but because I'm thinking I read that somewhere.
And as for acronyms, most of the ones I hear around here are generally pertaining to engines types; i.e. 22-RE, 3VZE, etc. Of course, there are also companies like ARB, but that's no too hard to figure out...

The large majorty of pre-runners, Trophy trucks, buggies, truggies, ect are 2wd because you dont need 4wd when your going 40-130 mph. Theres not much on a typical course that would require a 4wd vehicle. Not to say that there arent slow sections with hill climbs, sand washes and beaches where a 4wd would help, but the extra weight is not worth it.
Rod Hall runs some Hummers that are of course 4wd but their Heavy.

The only trophy truck I can think of that is 4wd off the top of my head is the terrible herbst tropy truck. I would say you dont see a lot of 4wd truck would be due to durability issues with the cv's and extreme travel.
In my book these are the ulltimate prerunners. this and this one

Maybee the other race teams should look into the 4x4 thing. Isn't the whole Herbst team pretty dominate. Or at least Troy is. But I've been out of it for a while.

We always think of the Prerunners as The trucks with the front jacked up higher than the back and with the unpainted fiberglass fenders, no functional truck bed, and enough tubing to build a bridge.
Like anything there are the really good ones and all the cheap imitators that give it a bad name.
