So here I am discovering more jenkyness about my existing parts. Looks like part of the timing chain guide that's molded to the casting snapped off at some point ... I didn't find anything in the cover or oil pan as far as fragments of aluminum but it's possible I did this when taking it off not 100% if it was prexisiting or not.
Anyway I know some guys will reuse the cover even if the chain etched into the surface of it so I'm wondering how mission critical is this little section of aluminum that snapped off? The cover isn't cracked it's just that part that broke off ... see picture.
I'm leaning on the side of buying a new one but I'm already having to get a new intake and upper chamber and this whole rebuild is beginning to go over budget. If I can save a few bucks by reusing it I will assuming it's not going to cause issues. It's kind of a pain in the the you know where to get at after the fact.

If that little nick is all that's wrong with it, I'd use it again.
it it appears that the tiny little section of the casting and a scratch that you can see to the right side of the image is all that's wrong. I think this was my fault. I tore this engine down to the block because of a head gasket issue but then I diagnosed rod knock and other issues so it became a full rebuild. The head was already off when I was trying to get the crank bolt off and I busted one of the prongs off my pulley holder and I think that's when the chain bunched up down there and busted the tab off. That crank bolt was a real SOB to get loose, I ended up having to wedge a screwdriver through the pulley and resting against the timing cover where the timing degree marks are located...I still busted a screwdriver in half as well.
that part help s with holding the timing chain to the crank gear when doing head gaskets, it stops the chain from dropping off the gear. . Most of it is still there. I wouldn't worry.
