Just put a new head and timing cover on the 22RE which of course meant all of the oil was drained out of the rocker arm assembly, oil pump, head, and everywhere else you could possibly store oil in the motor. I even wiped out the oil pan.

Now for the question... I put in 5 quarts of oil Saturday afternoon and drained it yesterday night. Allowing for about 1/2 quart of spillage while draining and pouring back into the new oil container (maybe a bit liberal) I still came up about 1/2 a quart low. I got about 4 quarts back into the 5 quart jug.

Does that sound reasonable to you guys or do you think I have an oil problem?

No smoke or smell from exhaust, oil leftover in water from other problem is going away as I flush it out, no obvious leaks...

A quart doesn't sound unreasonable. Youwill get oil in the pump and a pretty substantial amount in the FILTER, as well as throughout the passages in the engine that won't drain.

I Was Gonna Say The Same Thing Dude.... I Bet The Next Time You Do It Its Not Quite As Bad.. You Gotta Think It Was A Fresh Top End And The Pan Was Bone Dry... The Filter Holds About 1/4 A Quart.

the pan holds quite a bit of oil with the drain plug out, being that it's elevated and on an angle. also, the basins on top the head holds probably 1/2qt of oil at all times.

That's kind of what I figured...

I have seen a few puffs of blue smoke but I know that when it was apart I took a syringe and gave a little shot of oil in each spark plug hole because I cleaned the cylinders out when the head was off. I figure some of that oil went down to the rings and is working out slowly.

On a side note, the truck is really running good.

you should've seen me fire up the freshly rebuilt 22RE in my '91 the other day. took FOREVER to get it to start up, it just kept trying to start but would die when i stopped cranking. finally shoved the gas pedal to the floor and cranked it, it chugged to life with a HUGE cloud of black, blue and white smoke(condensation in the exhaust)

runs like a top now, just a little oily in the cylinders. better than having them dry and burning up the rings on the initial startup!

no doubt, when i rebuilt my 94 22re it actually started after about 5 seconds of cranking and it smoked the same way cuz i coated the cylinder walls with 10w-40 before i bolted the head on .... ive fould plugs like that before ... a little ether and a wire brush and good as new....
