Alright guys I know these power loss threads are pretty repetitive, but I was not able to find one with my exact problem so I thought id see if anyone had experienced it before. The scenario is this... last month I bought an 86 4runner off craigslist that had sat for about 8 years and was not running. I replaced fuel pump, fuel filter, removed and cleaned throttle body and intake manifold and replaced the gasket before reinstallation. After completing all that the truck started right up and ran great with plenty of power through all five gears. After driving it about 20 miles it has developed a problem with power in third gear. First and second gear I have full range of acceleration, but once I'm in third the engine craps out at about 3000 rpms with the pedal to the floor. It doesn't even give me enough power to make it out of third gear. I checked the timing belt guides and both were intact and everything seemed to be as it should. Anything other suggestions?

 

 

It runs cleanly up to right at 3000 rpms, but at that point acceleration slows to almost a complete stop. It doesn't bog down or anything it just wont accelerate enough to get an increase in rpms.

 

Vehicle stats..? 22re, manual transmission?

It was parked eight years ago for a reason, do you have any background?

What did the tank look like? Did you clean it? Did you reseal it?

How about compression once it warms up?

Clean shiny ground for the ignitor?

Plugs and leads?

Rats nest in the air box?

 

It was running fine in all gears then developed the problem..

After thoughts..

Inspect the exhaust system specifically the catalytic converter and muffler (drop the intermediate pipe off the exhaust manifold).

If you are getting the full RPM range in other gears it's still more likely the fuel problem.
