Switching from CA to Canada emissions on 83 pickup, 22r. Here's how it looked when I started:

 

Here's what we're switching too/how it's looking now, I got the intake manifold off and cleaned up, but didn't get pictures before sundown. I'll take some more tomorrow when I'm putting it back together.

 

These are the block off plates I put together for the egr ports and exhaust manifold, traced out the gaskets on scrap sheet metal, punched and drilled holes, then cut out and touched up with angle grinder. I think they came out alright. You can see on top of exhaust manifold the recirculation vents, I cut them flush with top of manifold, have to drill out broken bolt on left side but it'll turn out alright.

Here's some photos of the head and block after removing the intake and cleaning it up. These are the plates I put on top of exhaust manifold. Below that is the box of parts removed. It did feel good to clean out the engine bay.

So I got the broken bolt out, but lacked hardware for getting the new one in...this wire should hold until next trip to town, probably forever.

 

This is the intake manifold bolted back on with a new gasket, I've left the vacuum switches in, just disconnected, until I can grab bolts to replace. Also note the egr plates in place and secured, they fit nicely. I left the sensor in place on the bottom of intake, I don't plan on removing it unless someone could convince me of a good reason. Below that is a shot of the carb back in place, and then you can see the finished product. I think it looks pretty good.

So I got it started and timed it since the last post. What I was most impressed with was how well it idles now. Drops down to curb idle and just purrs steady. There's a few things to fine tune/plug up but for the most part I'm happy with it. I'll update again with pictures once everything's a little more finalized.

 

It does look much cleaner. What kind of emissions does this setup reduce with the EGR and secondary air injection systems removed?
Is it capable of passing a visual inspection?

Where I'm located along the northern front range of Colorado I have to pass a yearly visual inspection of my emissions system and an idle speed test to keep my truck registered.
Not easy to do with a Weber 38 and headers but I have managed.
My EGR system is blocked off but isn't necessary to pass the visual inspection. I just have to have a complete secondary air injection system bolted up and then re-tune the carb and timing and it will pass.
I make it sound easy but it was a lot of trial and error until I figured out what worked in my garage. It has definitely taught me a great deal about tuning Webers!

I'm genuinely interested in how your inspection test goes...which I'm assuming you have to take at some point.

 

It still has a charcoal canister and a cat. converter, I've read somewhere about bolting the egr over the plates, I imagine that would get it through visual. I live in a county that does not require smog, so I'm not sure how it would do. I imagine with some clever tuning you might get it through.
