OK. I'm not one to believe that a bottle in your tank can get you 40HP or a K&N filter will free up 50HP or else Toyota would sell a TRD brand K&N filter with every truck :-)

I have battled with a ping under load/acceleration in my 1993 Toyota 4x4 22re for 6 months. It was owned previously by an old guy, and I bought it with 58k original, dealer-serviced miles. Beautiful. BUT, he drove it 5k in the last 5 years. It had a ping that just wouldn't go away, even with the timing retarded 3 degrees from stock. I knew that the 22re could handle 3 EXTRA degrees from stock without ping in most cases. I tried colder plugs, pulled the injectors and cleaned, EGR perfect, engine barely hits 180 degrees in summer. It's like a new truck under the hood. My only thought? CARBON DEPOSITS from the old guy hardly running it long enough to keep it clean.

Tried 3 cans of GM Top Engine Cleaner (good chamber cleaner in most cases)...a bit better for a month or so. Ping returned.

I was about to find a shop that would blast the combustion chambers throug the spark plug hole with walnut shell blasting mix, but....


SOLUTION:

REDLINE SI-1

At the advice of the Toyota god "Dr. Zhivago" and a few others, I finally found it at a Pep Boys in Houston. Ran a whole bottle in a tank and...ready for this...NO MORE PING! You could gradually notice it going away. I thought to myself, "You've got to be ˟˟˟˟ting me...pour in bottles just don't do that." I'll be damned, but no ping. I've advanced timing back to stock...no ping. I'm going for a bit of advance next week. I pick up NOTICEABLE power with each degree...that 22re loves the advance!

Incidentally, it doesn't look, feel, or smell ANYTHING like those cheap FI cleaners on the market. Doesn't smell like lighter fluid or gas or alcohol, so I guess it really is different. I knew I had OLD deposits on the back of my intake valves. In a previous post I pulled the entire intake and could feel the deposits with my finger.

Anyways, I'm not a redline rep. Just a previous disbeliever. I still distrust "fixes in a bottle"...

I usually run a bottle thru the tank every 3K if I remember, but it usually works out to be around 5-6K. Been using it feh yeahs!

I've been following that post of yours, actually, Galen. Do you think it would be useful on a truck that has never had anything but Mobil 1 in it since it drove off the lot?

I still suppose even if you get less oil-degradation products with synthetics, you still always have a tiny amount of combustion gas blow-by past the rings to contaminate the crankcase, so it couldn't hurt :-)

 

Yep, I think it would behoove just about any engine. There are many Auto-RX customers who have run synthetics who have reported benefits from using it.
