Good day one an all. I'm having an issue, hoping someone can guide me. I am noticing when I start the
truck for the first time in the day or when Cold, the engine turns over once maybe twice before starting. After running it, turning it off an starting it again, it starts automatically. If it's warm, it starts right up. Can someone tell why is that.

 

Perfectly normal for the engine to crank a few extra revs, before starting cold.

Cold engines want richer fuel mixtures and it takes a second for the extra fuel that is supplied to the plenum by the cold-start injector to reach the cylinders.

The warmer the engine is, the easier it is for the air/fuel mixture to be ignited, as well.

Everything is likely Ok, unless you have very prolonged cranking before cold start-up. Does'nt sound like you do.

 

I believe it's a prolonged cranking. Could it be the cap an rotor,or maybe the the Starter?

 

Can you give a time in seconds from cold crank to start, or a video??

 

there is a check valve in the fuel pump that is supposed to hold the fuel pressure, it should start up fairly quickly after sitting overnight.

 

since it's "prolonged" cranking, whatever that is, how could it be the starter? the definition of cranking is when the engine turns over.

probably not the cap/rotor, because it works fine when cold.

 

My 4Runner, since new, would go "zit zit zit (and sometimes one more zit)" before "running"

I assume that each "zit" noise is one rev

360,000 miles later - it still does that. Tho if its been sitting in a snow bank for a week it sometimes takes 2-3 tries (NH winters - when I was going Ice Climbing or backpacking...)

I second this. Definitely not the starter. More like temperature-dependent.

It could be one or combination of many things
Could be fuel delivery, but to say "definitely" is jumping to conclusion. No offense, either
I suspected that on mine, too so I installed a fuel pressure gage piggybacked on CSI (here). However, even when fuel pressure is good, I still get hard starts when cold.
So... I'm still chasing it down, methodically.
Could be CSI timer switch Like mentioned above not sensing the cold temp.
Could be CSI timer switch sensing but power (or ground - gotta look at your schematic) is not getting to CSI.
Could be that CSI is getting power but not opening or is clogged.
Could be a sensor that tells ECU engine is still cold not doing its job. Could be idle control system being told engine is still cold but solenoid, etc not doing its job. I'm still trying to understand this part myself.
...etc.

Be patient, test out theories before replacing parts.

Are you saying the truck cranks the first time for 30 seconds it will never start ??

release the key crank again and the engine starts and runs fine??

Then starts just fine till it sits over night .
