I have a 88 4x4 pickup with 3.0, it will not go in any gear while it is running , but i can switch it off put it in gear and start it and it will take off fine. But still willn't take another gear.What the heck???

 

I had this issue with my daily driver. Ended up being clutch related, when I dropped the trans and clutch, I noticed the disc had lost a spring.

Almost certainly the clutch not fully disengaging.
